Robotics and engineering: a parent guide for Cambridge families
Robotics may fit a child who wants to build something physical and explore how its parts work together. Coding-only instruction may fit a child who mainly wants to create software or spend concentrated time learning a programming language. Start with the activity your child wants to try, then choose a format that matches their readiness.
Building, testing and changing an idea
Engineering design involves defining a problem, considering possible solutions, making prototypes, testing and refining them within limits.[7] For a parent, useful questions are simple: what was the model meant to do, what happened, and what could the child change? This framework describes design practice; it is not evidence of a particular Intell student outcome.
Physical computing connects software and hardware in systems that sense and respond. It can involve sensors, circuits, motors and debugging.[8] Code is part of that work, but so are physical connections and movement. A child who enjoys taking a model apart to understand it may find this combination worth exploring.
Junior Robotics and OBotz have different starting points
Intell describes Junior Robotics as a beginner hands-on introduction to simple machines, pneumatics, motion and renewable-energy themes.[6] It is a beginner engineering and building path to discuss when a child is curious about how things move and wants guided exploration. OBotz combines mechanical assembly, electronics, sensors, motors and visual or text coding.[5] It is the path to discuss when a child shows greater readiness to work with electronics alongside code. Observe fit before making a commitment
Ask your child whether they want to build a moving object, write a digital game or simply explore something new. A coding-only class can be a sensible choice for concentrated software interests. A first building experience can also make sense before a child wants electronics and programming together.
During a class discussion, ask how children receive help, what they do when a build does not work and how instructions are introduced. Notice whether your child wants to explain their attempt and try another step. These are useful observations, not a forecast of school performance.
